Preventing tooth decay is essential in maintaining good oral hygiene by teaching children at a very early age the importance of taking care of their teeth. Most everyone knows that brushing his or her teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day is the standard norm.

Bacteria on the tooth when combined with sugar causes tooth decay. This combination produces acid, which is what softens and causes destruction of the hard tissues of the tooth, called enamel and dentine. For this very reason, it is important to limit your sugar intake. If you do eat sugar, it is important to brush your teeth to remove the sugar to prevent any bacteria from forming into acid to eat away at the enamel.

In order to prevent cavities and still be able to eat some sweets is to make sure you have a rest period in between sugar consumption. Giving your teeth four or five hours to recover from the acid attack produced by sugar will allow your teeth to recover before the next onslaught of sugar on the teeth. Make sure you use fluoride toothpaste since fluoride appears to help counteract the effects of sugar on the teeth too.

It is helpful to chew sugar-free gum for 20 minutes three times a day. This increases the production of saliva, which helps to neutralize the plaque acid and wash it away. The teeth are bathed in good minerals such as fluoride, calcium and phosphate. These minerals strengthen tooth enamel, while preventing cavities.

Xylitol is a natural sugar that has shown to help prevent cavities. It slows the growth of the bacterium known as Streptococcus mutans, because it cannot utilize the xylitol for the growth of this bacterium. The longer xylitol is used, the mouth stops harboring the bacteria and it actually changes over time and fewer cavities are noticed with the use of the xylitol. Plaque formation is also reduced along with the amount of acids that attack the tooth.

According to the California Dental Association, the Streptococcus mutans is passed to the newborn from the parents, causing the child to have these decay-producing bacteria. The mother can use xylitol and greatly reduce the transmission of the bacteria to their child. This results in fewer cavities in children.

Once dental caries are present, the only option is to remove the bad portion of the tooth and replace it with a filling. If you find yourself with an emergency due to a filling falling out or a cavity that has continued to crumble away and causing severe pain, you can call Emergency Dental Care and see a dentist immediately if you require urgent care.
