Trying for a little one? Now is the time to get your teeth thoroughly checked and treated. While regular dental care can be provided during the second trimester of pregnancy, it should be avoided during the first trimester and the latter part of the third trimester. Therefore, making sure to visit your dentist before there is a bun in the oven should be a priority.

However, oral hygiene and dental care are important to keep up during pregnancy. Do to the influx of high amounts of hormones, pregnant women are at risk for developing gum disease, or pregnancy gingivitis. Regular brushing and flossing habits and coming in for a routine cleaning will go a long way towards preventing problems.

Dental procedures to be avoided during pregnancy:

  • X-rays
  • Oral surgery
  • Elective dental work

Dental care essential during pregnancy:

  • Routine cleaning and dental visit

Be sure to tell your dentist about any medications or vitamins that you are taking while pregnant. Eating nutritious foods full of calcium is essential for both you and baby. Your child will start to develop teeth as early as three months in uterus. And remember, tooth decay still occurs when you consume sugary food – even when you are satisfying that chocolate cake craving at three in the morning.
